My favourite campsite. We had to deflate our tyres to drive on the soft sand, and follow a 10 year old who’s dad lent him his landcruiser to show us the way to a good camping spot. No really, he was 10.

When most travellers plan a trip to the Arabian Peninsula, iconic transit hubs and glittering metropolises like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha usually dominate the itinerary. They offer luxury and hyper-modern ambition — but if you are searching for raw, untamed wilderness, rich ancient culture, and genuine space to breathe, the Sultanate of Oman offers a far richer alternative.
Oman is Arabia’s authentic heartland — a country defined not by record-breaking towers, but by ancient trade routes, emerald palm oases, dramatic geological tears, and a timeless, traditional way of life. For those seeking true adventure, it holds a secret that sets it apart from its Gulf neighbours: wild camping is 100% legal almost everywhere across the country.

Instead of high-rise luxury hotels in Dubai or artificial islands in Abu Dhabi, imagine packing a 4x4 with a heavy-duty roof tent, steering off the tarmac, and making the open landscape your resort. 1. Muscat: Coastal Cliffs and Wild Waters
Your journey begins in the capital, Muscat — a peaceful contrast to the constant bustle of Dubai or Doha. Here, strict architectural laws keep buildings low, white, and classic, set against the dark, imposing backdrop of the Hajar Mountains. Before taking your 4x4 into the wilderness, take to the Gulf of Oman’s clear waters.
An early morning boat trip out along the dramatic cliff-lined coastline brings wild encounters with massive pods of spinner dolphins playing in the vessel’s wake. Returning to the mainland, you can steer your vehicle right onto the rugged coastal headlands just south of the city, unfurling your rooftop tent as the waves crash against the rocks far below.

2. Ad Dakhiliyah: Soaring Cliffs, Hidden Oases & Ancient Ruins
Heading inland into the Ad Dakhiliyah region, the landscape turns grandly theatrical, offering dramatic canyon terrain you simply won't find on day trips out of Abu Dhabi.
Nakhal Fort: Nestled at the foot of the mountains surrounded by sprawling date palm groves, this 17th-century fortress offers a masterclass in traditional Omani architecture.
The Ruins & Oases: Driving through abandoned mud-brick villages like Birkat Al Mouz, you can walk alongside ancient falaj irrigation channels, a UNESCO-protected system that has fed these verdant mountain oases for centuries.
The Cliffs: Engaging low-range 4WD, track up the dirt switchbacks of the Jebel Shams mountain range. Camping on the edge of Oman’s "Grand Canyon" at nearly 3,000 metres offers crisp mountain air, brilliant night skies, and a sunrise you’ll never forget.

While dune bashing tours in Dubai or Doha often mean following long lines of tourist convoys, the vast rolling ocean of copper-orange sand in Ramlat Al Wahibah (Sharqiya Sands) gives you the freedom to carve your own path.

4. Salalah & The South: Emerald Wadis & Tropical Greenery
Drive south toward Dhofar and Salalah, and Oman pulls off its most astonishing surprise. While cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai bake under intense summer heat, Salalah experiences the Khareef (monsoon season), transforming the arid landscape into a tropical, mist-shrouded green paradise.
Cascading waterfalls, lush emerald wadis (like Wadi Darbat), and grazing camels amongst thick vegetation offer a stark, stunning contrast to the rest of the Gulf. Splashing through shallow wadi beds in a 4x4 to reach secluded freshwater pools is an off-road lover's dream.
